Olga M. Zimmerman, 97, of Oregon, Ohio passed away, peacefully at her home on June 17, 2018. Olga was born in Tiffin, Ohio on June 20, 1920 to Percy and Lydia (Bader) Kerschner. Olga graduated from Devilbiss High School and went on to graduate from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, and then the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. Later, she obtained her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Toledo. She was an active member of Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity.
She was a member of the United States Navy, serving in Philadelphia as a nurse during World War II. She was very proud of her country and service. Olga married the love of her life, Norman Zimmerman in 1947, who preceded her in death in 1991. She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, and most recently a 40-year member of First St. John's Lutheran Church, where she regularly volunteered and led various groups.
After retiring, Olga and Norman spent their retirement winters in Tucson, Arizona, where they would enjoy their time golfing, swimming, hiking, gardening, entertaining and learning the culture and heritage of the area. She loved to bake and cook, and was an avid golfer, gardener and bicyclist. She loved to travel and made many trips to Europe and the western US. She also traveled to Alaska and spent many winters in Florida.
Olga had a strong love and affinity for pets, particularly dogs and cats, and often adopted shelter animals needing a good home.
She was always a caregiver to those who needed it. She was the leader of her social group, planning events and carrying them out throughout her many years of residence at Bayberry Place in Oregon. She was regarded as a strong, natural leader and her influence was felt in her family life, church, and career. She was highly regarded in the Toledo school system, having served many years as Assistant Principal and Principal at Oakdale and Stickney Elementary schools.
