Obituary

Paul H. Bigley, 83, former resident of Oregon and East Toledo, passed away at Heartland of Waterville on Sunday, February 25, 2007, after a short illness. Paul was a kind, gentle, witty, and loving man whose actions provided an upstanding example to his children and friends that often spoke louder than his words. Paul was born in Toledo on June 21, 1923, a son of Charles H. and Laura A. (Peeps) Bigley. He married Lucille (Sue) Siewert on November 15, 1943, and they shared nearly 61 years together before her passing in October, 2004. Paul was the beloved father of two daughters, Susan Appel (Kent Snodgrass), Champaign, IL, and Connie Schmaltz (Ned), Travelers Rest, SC, and the loving grandfather of Timothy Schmaltz (Jessica), Clayton, NC; Nathan Schmaltz, Johns Island, SC and Amanda Schmaltz, Oxford, OH. Paul is also survived by his brother, Charles J. (Yvonne) Bigley; sister, Phyllis Waggoner and sister-in-law, Maxine Bigley, all of Toledo, and by a large number of nieces and nephews. Paul attended various local elementary schools and graduated from Waite High School in 1941, where he was a member of the football team. He attended The University of Toledo, intending to study theology, but also continuing his interest in art until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He was a member of the elite 10th Mountain Division, training with the ski troops at Camp Carson, CO, and serving as a cook and baker there and in occupied Germany in the later part of World War II. After the war, Paul was employed for many years as an electrician at Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company in Rossford, OH. In the 1960's he joined Chrysler Corporation as an electrician, and later as a supervisor at the Perrysburg Township Plant, from which he retired. A long-time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Oregon, Paul served many years on the church vestry, and as a layreader, in addition to singing in the choir. He loved music and playing the piano in his own individual way. As leader of an Explorer Post in the 1960's, Paul led his Scouts on summer canoeing and camping trips down the AuSable River in Michigan. He was also a Big Brother in the 1970's. For many years Paul was an active member of the Oregon Republican Club, running for Mayor of Oregon in the 1970's. He was active in the Oregonian Club, East Toledo Oregon Kiwanis Club, Oregon Civitan Club, the Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society, and the 10th Mountain Division veteran's organization, and he served as an ombudsman at St. Charles Hospital. Paul and his wife, Sue enjoyed traveling, and had visited every state of the Union, several provinces in Canada, a number of Caribbean islands, and Norway, and in earlier days, they spent long, happy days boating and water skiing. Paul enjoyed photography and was well known for his dedication to sunrises and sunsets. He was a skilled craftsman and loved gardening and the outdoors as much as he enjoyed remodeling the various homes he and Sue shared over the years. He lived his life well, even through the difficulties of recent years. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston - Meinert - Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Navarre and Coy Roads, Oregon, with the Rev. Mark Bigley officiating. Memorials may be made in Paul's name to the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer's Association, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.
