Paul F. Snider Jr., 68, of Toledo, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 30, 1943 to Paul F. and Dorothy (Niemeyer) Snider Sr. where he grew up in a hard-working middle class family. He always loved sports; playing football, baseball, and tennis. In 1961, he graduated from Morrison R. Waite High School. Following graduation, he joined the US Air Force serving in Security Services for over 7 years.
Paul married his high school sweetheart Sandy Mills December 26, 1964. They spent the first three years of their marriage in Bremerhaven, Germany. In 1968, Paul and Sandy returned to Toledo where he went to work for the US Postal Service. He was a strong union man and became actively involved in APWU Local #170. He served as Steward, Chief Steward, Vice President, and President. In 1992, he retired from the Postal Service due to health problems, but remained active with the Union Retirees Organization. In 1997, Paul was a part of a team which formed the first state retiree'™s organization in American Postal Workers Union history.
Paul was a member of the Lucas County Memorial Association for many years, honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. He spent many Memorial Day weekends placing the American Flag on gravesites of our fallen heroes. He was President, Parade Chairman for 15 years, and was a Grand Marshall.
Paul had been a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Life Member for 32 years. As a member of Mont Faucon Chapter # 27, where he served as Treasurer, Jr. and Sr. Vice Commander, Commander, Service Officer, and Fourth District Commander. He was a commissioner on the Lucas County Veterans Service Commission for 5 years. He was appointed to the State Executive Committee in 2000 and went on to fill the chairs of 2nd and 1st Jr. Vice. He was nominated and elected State Commander on June, 2005.
He is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Sandy; sons, Jeffrey (Becky) and Kevin (Christy); grandchildren, Jerricka (Tony), Patricia, and Michael, and great-grandson, Cohen; sister, Barbara (Arnie) Cowell and Patricia (Wendell) Meek. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Tuesday, December 27th from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, where a DAV memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorials may be directed to Disabled American Veterans Mont Faucon Chapter # 27, 2802 Airport Highway, Toledo, Ohio 43609.
