Pauline Cora (Welling) Gaertner, 97, formerly of the Genoa area and North Toledo, passed away on June 22, 2015 at Orchard Villa, Oregon , Ohio . Pauline was born on February 4, 1918 to George J. and Mary A. (Hanely) Welling at her family's farmhouse in Lake Township . She
attended Township schools and was the last surviving member of the Lake High School class of
1936. In October 1940 she wed Karl W. Gaertner and they remained married for 60 years until
his death in June 2000.
Pauline grew up in an era before rural electrification and indoor plumbing and often recalled fond memories of farm life in the 1920s and during the Great Depression. She was shaped by these experiences and developed an enduring love for gardening, house plants, and sewing. Being very resourceful and inventive, she would never discard an item that could be repurposed. In 1957 Pauline began working in the Personnel Dept. at Sears & Roebuck in downtown Toledo . She transferred to Sears Westgate when it opened in 1960 and to the Woodville Mall store in 1969. She retired in March 1981. Pauline inherited a love of genealogy from her mother and she kept detailed records of her family history. She remained in contact with many of her 30+ first cousins through letters, phone calls, and visits. Family was important to her and her love for her children and grandchildren was evident through her thoughtfulness and genuine interest in their activities. Pauline was a member of St John's Lutheran Church in Stony Ridge and the Rebekah Circle , and the former Apostles' Lutheran Church in Toledo .
In addition to her husband and parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her brothers Alfred,
Robert, and Harold Welling, and grandson David Taylor. She is survived by her children: Susan
(Richard) Taylor, George (Pamela) Gaertner, and John (Sue) Gaertner; grandchildren: Shawn
(Bob) Masters, Mark Gaertner, James (Beth) Gaertner, Kelly Gaertner, Christopher (Marie)
Gaertner, Eric Taylor, and Kevin Taylor; great grandchildren: Abigail, Jonah, Nathan, Simon,
Tyler, Kelsey, Cooper, Caleb, Kailey, Caden, McKenna, and Gavin.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Orchard Villa for the wonderful care given to Pauline
during her stay there, and also to the hospice aides who provided much comfort and support.
