Phyllis Jenkins was a graduate of Libbey High School (1948) and received her Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Toledo (1952). At UT, she was a member of the Mortar Board honorary society, the Chi Omega sorority, and was named the Regional Dream Girl representing the BGSU chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity, her husband's fraternity, in 1953.
She taught at Franklin Grade School, where she had been a student herself, Starr Elementary, and Fassett Middle School, totaling 32 years. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Fraternity and the Lucas County and Ohio Retired Teacher's Association.
Phyllis was a member of Eastminster United Presbyterian Church for over 63 years and held the 9th longest membership in the congregation. She sang in the Eastminster Choir for over 60 years and taught Sunday School for over 25 years. She was an Elder and Trustee of the church as well as a member of the Ruth Circle of the Presbyterian Women. She had served as President, Vice President, Secretary for Spiritual Life and Stewardship, and Circle Leader for the Women's Association Board. Phyllis and her husband also led the Eastminster Young People's Group for five years.
She served her community as a Trustee for Charles Crest, a subsidiary of Mercy Health Partners, and was a member of the Mercy College and St. Charles/Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She was a long time member of the Crystal Ball committee for the St. Charles/Mercy Hospital. Phyllis, along with her husband Ted, was a charter member of the St. Charles/Mercy Hospital Cornerstone Club. She was a Trustee of the Child Care Branch of the Y.M.C.A of Greater Toledo. Phyllis was a member of the University of Toledo Alumni Association, whose alumni director, Dan Savig, was a student of Phyllis' in the 6th grade at Starr Elementary. Phyllis was also a member of the BGSU Presidents Club.
Phyllis and her husband lived in Oregon, Ohio for over 37 years and moved into the Swan Creek Retirement Village in 1995 where she was an active member of the community. She sang with the Swan Creek Singers, was co-manager of the Swan Creek Gift Shop, and was a member of the life care card committee.
She is survived by her husband, Theodore G. Jenkins; daughters, Jane Arimoto (of Springfield, PA) and Ruth Jenkins (of Fresno, CA); sons-in-law Steve Arimoto and John Moses; sister, Dolores (Don) Saunders; six grandchildren, Jordan, Cameron, and Amy Arimoto, Stephanie Hamel, and Kathryn and Emily Jenkins-Moses, and a great-grandson, Ryan Hamel. The family gathered in Bar Harbor, Maine in July 2003 to celebrate Phyllis and Ted's 50th anniversary.
The family has requested a private funeral but is planning a memorial in May to celebrate her life. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Eastminster United Presbyterian Church, the St. Charles/Mercy Hospital Foundation, the University of Toledo School of Education, or the Swan Creek/Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services. Arrangements are being handled by the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Homes.
