The son of William and Mary (Schimmel) Schimming, he was born on February 10, 1919, in the Schimming homestead, Williston, Ohio. He married Ruth Kasischke on June 6, 1941, in Gibsonburg, Ohio. He had fond memories of the many students he interacted with throughout the years. As a young adult, Ray played several years as a pitcher for the Williston Merchants Double A Baseball Team and many other local teams winning several championships.
