Raymond V. Walendzak, 75, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 27, 1941 to Stanley and Joan (Krzywonos). After graduating from Clay High School, Ray attended Findlay College where he played football and wrestled. He joined the United Stated Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.
Ray was the Chief of the Oregon Fire Department for over 20 years, with a total of 39 years of service before his retirement in 2007. Upon retirement, Ray received the Distinguished Service Award and was inducted into the Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame. Ray cared passionately about the fire-fighting community and dedicated many years of service to its various organizations including; past president of the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, Lucas County Fire Chiefs, Oregon Fire Fighters Association, Ottawa County Fireman's Association, and for over 26 years as past president and secretary for the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Fire Association. He was also appointed by the governor to serve on the State of Ohio EMS Board for 12 years during which he spent several years as the chairman. He was inducted into the Clay High School Hall of Fame in 2014. Ray's dedication to the community did not stop at the fire department. He was a member and past president of the Oregon School Board as well as a member of the American Legion Christ Dunberger Post #537, Knights of Columbus, Swiss Club at the GAF, Clay Boosters and St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Ray also dedicated many many years in coaching through the Oregon Recreation Department as well as Oregon Clay High School for 13 years as a football coach.
Ray is survived by his sons, Dean (Rebecca), Donald (Christie), and Dennis (Chris); 6 grandchildren; siblings, Kay Drill and Valerie (Joe) Buffy. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert and James Walendzak; grandson, Brunnon Walendzak.
Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Monday, June 12, 2017 and Tuesday, June 13, 2017 from 2:00pm - 8:00 pm. Christ Dunberger American Legion Post services will be conducted on Tuesday at 7:00 pm with the Fire Department service following. Prayers will begin in the funeral home Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 10:00 am and proceed to St. Ignatius Catholic Church 212 N. Stadium Rd. Oregon, OH for Ray's funeral at 11:30 am. Christ Dunberger American Legion Post #537 Military Honors and Last Alarm services will be conducted immediately after the funeral. Interment will be private.
