Reed Clark Johns 75, lifelong resident of Lake Township and Millbury, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 10, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on March 1, 1936 to Richard and Ione (Rambo) Johns. He was a 1955 graduate of Lake High School. Reed met the love of his life, Ramona Kay Starr, at the former Webster High School (now Eastwood High School). They married January 31, 1959. Reed was employed with the former Libbey Owens Ford Company (now Pilkington) in Rossford for 40 years, retiring in 1996. He held many positions; starting out in the 'œBox' shop and in later years, a management position. Reed'™s work ethic was never faltering. During the 1978 Blizzard he was determined to get to work, but soon found out the blinding weather conditions forced him to drive into a snowdrift. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul'™s United Methodist Church in Millbury where he served as a Trustee, Usher and Greeter for many years.
Reed and his family had a true admiration for antique cars and tractors. The family would often travel with friends on weekends from town to town, attending car shows. Reed and Kay would go to many 'œCruise-In'™s' including the Millbury Ox Roast, Pemberville, Genoa, and Cousino'™s Steak House in Oregon. A picture of Reed and Kay with their car hangs proudly in the restaurant they patronized many times over the years. Reed was a true 'œFord Man' and loved Ford Pickup Trucks. He was a frequent visitor at Genoa Motors, where he would purchase his new trucks. His love for the automobile was never faltering; waxing his cars and trucks to a showroom shine. He was a member of the Pioneer Auto Club, VMCCA Veteran Motor Car Club America, and the Cadillac Lasalle Club. Reed loved to wear caps advertising his favorite tractor or dealership. His love for automobiles led to his passion for Indy and NASCAR racing. In his early years, Reed had a passion for motorcycles. Reed rode a Harley Davidson, and later a Honda Goldwing Aspencade. He and Kay traveled throughout the United States with the Gold Wing Riders Association.
Reed enjoyed keeping a pristine lawn around his childhood home where he lived since 1963, always raking leaves or shoveling snow. He was a wonderful neighbor. He was always the neighbor man assisting neighbors, especially in the winter plowing their driveways and lending a hand. He built his daughters playhouse when they were little. In later years, he built a playhouse for his granddaughter Jordan. He remodeled his oldest daughter Debbie'™s basement and built his daughter Dawn'™s barn. While not working, he enjoyed listening to country music, The Lawrence Welk Show, and 'œHee Haw'. He was a proper man with a kind spirit who always wanted and did the 'œright thing'. He had many friends and you were never a stranger for long when you met Reed. He would extend his 'œsignature handshake'. Throughout his illness he remained loving and appreciative of the assistance that he was given, for which the family is grateful.
Left to cherish his abiding love and memory are his wife of 53 years, Ramona Kay; daughters, Debbie Proffitt, Dawn (Gary) Blausey, and Diane (Dave) Stegeman; grandchildren, Dustin Proffitt, Brittney (Paul Culbertson) Proffitt, Terrell West Serenity and Sevario Proffitt, Kyle Rublaitus, and Jordan Blausey; great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Culbertson; goddaughter, Serena Dominquez; twin brother, Ronald Johns; brothers, Alan, Philip and Kirk Johns: sisters, Kay Isbell, Beth Whitmire, and Lura Currie. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lee and Russell Johns, and nephew, Johnny Johns.
