Obituary

Richard L. "Dick" Hillyer passed peacefully, Saturday, January 18, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dick was born November 12, 1932, in Logan, Ohio to Charles and Ethel (Conkle) Hillyer. The family of five moved to Oregon, OH settling in the Navarre/Coy area. He was a member of the Clay High School graduating class of 1950 where he was a member of the track team, choir and enjoyed writing poetry. In his sophomore year he began working at JC Penneys on Main Street where he met the girl that would become his wife of 74 years, Barbara Ann Hawn. They married soon after graduation.

Dick worked over 20 years in auto sales and management at Dunn Chevrolet and Carl Schmidt/Bob Schmidt Chevrolet. He brought home classic cars for family and neighbors to enjoy. Dick later worked for Island Woodworks learning a brand-new trade where he excelled. In his 80's, Dick shared his knowledge of woodworking and home repair with customers at Fleeger's Hardware – his favorite job.

Dick was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served as property manager for many years and was a member of the Lotus Masonic Lodge. Dick enjoyed sharing a round of golf with friends at Bay View Retirees Golf Course and lunch after at McDonalds. He had a love of animals, especially his cat Lola and dog Molly. He and Barbara enjoyed weekend vacations and canoe trips, games of all kinds, renting cottages on Michigan Lakes and vacationing with family.

Dick is survived by his wife of 74 years, Barbara; children, Debbie Hecklinger, Kim Hillyer, Jay (Laura) Hillyer; grandchildren, Adam (Jill) Hecklinger, Katie Hillyer, Zach (Holly) Hillyer, Alec (Rachel Schatz) Hillyer and Emily (Khader Alshaar) Hillyer; great grandchildren, Brenden, Paige, Maddie, and Liam; sister-in-law, Janet Hillyer; special friend, Jeff Alvarado; along with many nieces, loving family members and dear friends.
