Richard Louis Schrader, a man whose eclectic life and generous spirit, admired by many, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008 in hospice care at Lake Park, after a long struggle with prostate cancer. Known affectionately as "Uncle Dick" to a host of friends, he was born on October 29, 1931 in Monroe, Michigan. A 1950 graduate of Monroe High School, he was an outstanding ice skater in his youth, and was one of the youngest civilian pilots to qualify for an aviation license. Dick attended the University of Illinois for training with the United States Air Force, and served through the Korean War before attending Michigan State University.
He is perhaps best remembered as an avid boater, having acquired his first craft in 1951. Over the years, he was often an instructor for marine safety courses. In the early years of the Corvette, Dick was the sports car manager for Jim White Chevrolet. He also invested in the mobile home industry, and was a leading night club owner in Toledo for many years, at various times operating 21 West Lounge, the Westgate Lounge, Beverly Hills Café, Blu Jeans and BJs Lounge. He also held a business interest in Beverly Hills Florists.
Surviving are his step-son and his family, James (Barbara), Kayla, David Luce; sister, Nancy; brother-in-law, Norman; nieces and nephews. His dear friend and fellow boater, Greg Knott, especially remembered, are his good friends, Steve Traudt, Bill Cottle, Dean Riggs, Don Weilere, Dave Bacso, Todd Myers, Shane and Scott, and the wonderful staff and clientele of the Monroe Street Diner. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Alberta, Bernadine, Dorothy and Helen.
