Obituary

Richard V. Smith, 85, of Oregon, Oh passed away Tuesday, February 07, 2006 in St. Charles Mercy Hospital. Mr. Smith was born in Toledo on July 9, 1920 to Harold and Ida (Steiert). He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Richard was a 1938 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He became the owner and operator for over 50 years of the E.J. Smith Market, a long time East Toledo Grocery store that began with his grandfather. Located at Starr and East Broadway, the store was honored for nearly 100 years of service in 1979 when the store was closed as a result of Richard and his wife Marge's poor health. After the store's closing he also worked at Schorlings 5 Star market where he served as manager until his retirement in 1985. He liked people and loved the grocery business where his life included many 100 hour weeks. Many stories were told of the market's help to East Toledo and Rossford families during the great depression. He continued to be repaid for many years for the kindness and credit his family afforded his patrons. Mr. Smith was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, East Toledo Club, Arthur Daly American Legion Post, Clay High School Booster Club (1936-1937), Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Fatima. Surviving are his daughter, Sharon Herman; brother, William (Cheryl); grandsons, Rick Smith and Daniel Szymanski; great-granddaughters, Whitney and Kelsey Szymanski and Cassandra Smith. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (Sass) Smith; brother, Edward and grandchildren, Bart Smith and Kelley Szymanski. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, on Thursday, February 9, 2006, from 2 until 9 pm where an Arthur Daly service will be held at 7 pm. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 a.m. and proceed to St. Thomas Aquinas Church for 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Elliston Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Richard's name may be sent to Central Catholic H.S. or The American Heart Association. Visitation: Visitation Times Thursday, 2:00 - 9:00 p.m. Oregon Chapel
