Robert D. "Buffy" Barciz was born an East-sider on October 1, 1934, and died an East-sider on July 10, 2008. Although not a quiet soul, Bob will foremost be remembered as a caring son, a high-spirited brother, an adoring grandfather and the best friend a son and a daughter could ever want. He grew into fatherhood, from being a typical provider always working hard to fulfill a family's basic needs to becoming a father who shared his personal story and made his children know of his pride in and his profound love for them. He shared his best gab sessions just for them. He cherished the role of grandpa and Bradley's and Samantha's talents taught him that there is more to life than just sports. Bob was a butcher, a brine-maker, a security guard, a community leader and most of all, a basketball coach. Along with his professional careers at Schmidt Meat Packing and Toledo Edison, Buffy could be found coaching at the gyms of St. Stephen's and Cardinal Stritch High School. Basketball and players were his first loves. His 55 years as a coach began in 1953 with the CYO. His '59, '60 and '63 teams won Ohio State championships and his '62 team was State runner-up. In 1971, he began coaching at Cardinal Stritch High School. While varsity head coaches came and went, Buffy continued to coach both boys' and girls' frosh and junior varsity teams and was preparing for this year's campaign, his 38th. Buffy also coached boys' baseball and was a CYO softball official for more than 20 years. Bob took great pride that Birmingham blood coursed through his veins. He was a 30 year member of the Birmingham Neighborhood Coalition and an officer for 20. He was an officer of the Birmingham Hall of Fame for 17 years, a member of V.F.W. 4906, a past member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Stephen's Holy Name Society. In 1990, and again in 2007 as a member of the CYO State Championship team, Buffy was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame. If you knew Bob, you knew his home was always a place to "drop-by", especially during the Ethnic Festival or for a good game of pinochle. Bob is survived by his two children; son, David Jace and daughter, Linda Marie; her husband, Wayne Taylor Swisher and their two children, Bradley David Barciz and Samantha Lynn Swisher. He is also survived by his special lady, Pat Sibbersen; his baby sister, JoAnn Sulaica; nine nieces and nephews and countless basketball sons and daughters. He was met in heaven by his parents, Joseph and Anna (Beres) Barciz and his brother, Edward. Friends and family may visit the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH on Sunday and Monday from 2-8 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Stephen's Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at North Oregon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Bob's memory are encouraged to consider a donation to the Buffy Barciz Memorial Fund for Youth. May he be remembered for being both passionate and caring.
