Obituary

Robert Vincent 'œBob' Connelly Jr., age 81, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2012, in the house he built for his young family in 1960. Bob graduated from Lima St. Rose high school where he participated in Buckeye Boys State and on a state runner-up basketball team, and from the University of Cincinnati as a member of the Delta Tau Delta and Pi Tau Sigma (Engineering) fraternities. He was a devoted father and grandfather who loved following the sporting and artistic events of his eight children and fourteen grandchildren. He also enjoyed professional golf tournaments and was an avid fan of Notre Dame football. Other hobbies included singing in church choirs and barbershop quartets, participating in a family construction business, and playing amateur sports of all kinds. Above all, his passion was spending time with his family, sharing songs and stories that will forever be treasured. Bob had an innovative and distinguished career in building inspection, which began with the City of Mansfield in 1974. He had previously worked as an engineer for Standard Oil of Ohio, Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI, and as a residential builder for Morley Building and Construction Company of Mansfield, OH. He became Chief of Building Inspection for Wood County and surrounding areas in 1978. During his tenure with Wood County he doubled the department'™s jurisdiction area, computerized the permit and inspection processes, co-founded the Northwest Ohio Building Officials group, and established building inspection as a self-sufficient department. He served in many capacities including Vice President of OBOA, co-chairman of BOCA National Mechanical Code Committee, and 5 years as chairman of the American Building Officials'™ Model Energy Code Change Committee, where he contributed to the national energy policy. He received the highest award of the Ohio Building Officials Association, the Victor Jones Award. Upon his retirement in 1996, his significant contributions were recognized by Governor George Voinovich, Attorney General Betty Montgomery, and Ohio Representative Randy Gardner. Bob is survived by Marguerite Mary (Peg) Connelly, his loving wife of 56 years; children Barb, Robert III (Lisa), Linda, Dan (Lynn), Richard (Miriana), John (Amy), Stephen (Sarah); grandchildren, Sarah, Shannon, Jacquie, Maria, Louis, Megan, Natalie, John David, Alison, Maureen, Alexandria, Benjamin, Caitlin, and Caroline; great granddaughter, Emmalynn; sisters, Mary Helen Bagge, Patricia Andrews, and brother, John Connelly. He was preceded in death by his son Bill and, parents, Robert V. and Helen (Hay) Connelly. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road Oregon on Sunday, July 15th from 1:00-7:00 pm where the rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 9:15 am Monday, July 16th with prayers in the funeral home and proceed to St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 212 N. Stadium Road, Oregon for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am.
