Robert J. Hammersmith, 89, of Curtice, Ohio, and formerly of Walbridge, Ohio, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018 at his home. Bob was born in Rudolph, Ohio on February 21, 1929 to Henry and Helen Hammersmith and was raised by his mother and step-father, Cyrus Higgins. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. On November 25, 1950, he married the love of his life, Betty Zunk. For 42 years, Bob worked at Libbey-Owens-Ford, retiring in 1992. While living in Walbridge, Bob served on village council for three terms. His memberships included: Calvary Lutheran Church, Order of Eastern Star, Zenobia Shrine, Port Lawrence Masonic Lodge, and VFW Post 9963. Bob had a passion for tinkering in his garage; however, his true love was his family. Bob is survived by his children, Vicki (Dennis) Lahey, Dennis (Cheri) Hammersmith, Brian (Jane) Hammersmith; grandchildren, Rachelle (Eric) Kistner, Robert (Cassandra) Hammersmith, Breann Lahey, and Nathan Hammersmith; 2 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; daughter, Debbie; 2 sisters and 3 brothers. The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel, 1111 Woodville Road (east of I-280) on Monday, October 22, 2018 from 2:00pm until time of funeral service at 6:00pm. Private burial will be in Lake Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice.
