Robert Nortman Imhoff, 92, died at home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Robert (Bob) was born in Charleston, West Virginia on January 9, 1926, to Peter and Agnes Imhoff. Bob and wife Virginia resided at The Waterford at Levi Commons in Perrysburg, Ohio for the past 4 years. Having lived in Oregon, Ohio for 40 years, he was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. Bob attended grade school and high school in Charleston, W.Va. before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. After completing his service in World War II, he married Virginia Ann Schaferin inCharleston in 1948. Bob graduated from The Ohio State University in March, 1950, with a Master of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Upon graduation he retuned to active duty in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He served at the Wright Patterson Air Development Center, Dayton, Ohio, developing new applications of steel in aircraft design. Bob spent forty years working for several companies as a ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgist, including: Bingham-Herbrand Corp. (Fremont, Ohio); Fairbanks Morse (Beloit, Wisconsin); J.I.Case Company (Racine, Wisconsin); and Brush Wellman Company (Elmore, Ohio). He retired in 1991 from Plant 2, Doehler Jarvis, Corp., Toledo, after serving thirteen years as Plant Metallurgist. He also enjoyed ten years of teaching Metallurgy at Owens Community College. Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His love of outdoor sports: hunting; fishing; camping; gardening; and golfing was passed on to his children and grandchildren. Bob was a do-it-yourselfer and enjoyed home renovations and automobile maintenance. Hobbies included taxidermy and fly tying, building extravagant kites and model airplanes, and collecting turn-of-the-century golf clubs. He and Virginia loved to travel, dance, garden, play cards and spend time with their many friends including those they made at The Waterford at Levis Commons. Bob was a member of Epiphany of the Lord Church (St. Thomas Aquinas) for 44 years where he served as a Liturgical Minister. During his retirement years, Bob enjoyed researching his family genealogy. He and Virginia traveled to Germany to visit the birthplace of his great-grandfather in Frammersbach, Germany. Later in life Bob enjoyed writing. He authored several books which included: two books about his family history; one reminiscing his childhood fishing expeditions with his brother Al in West Virginia; another of his World War II experiences; and a short story of his adventures with his grandson, Bradley. He is survived by Virginia, his wife of 70 years; sons Steven (Karen), Cincinnati, Ohio, and Peter, Medford, New Jersey; daughters, Laura Thomas (Ronald Szegedi), Perrysburg, Ohio and Susan Bement, Wellington, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Eckhart, Raleigh, N.C; grandchildren, Michelle Thomas, Michael (Stephanie) Thomas, Sarah (Benjamin) Abramowitz, Kristen (Michael) Schmitt, Kaitlyn Imhoff and Bradley Bement; and great grandchildren Avery and Audrey Thomas and Austin Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alvin; sisters, Madeline Young and Mary McDougle; and grandson, Michael Imhoff. The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, with sharing of memories at 6:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 11:00 am in Epiphany of the Lord Parish- St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 729 White Street, Toledo, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10:00am. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
