E8 Master Sargent Robert F. Lober, 96, formerly of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13, 2019 surrounded by loved ones. Bob was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 12, 1922 to William and Delpha (Hoagland) Lober. Bob served in the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Utah planting trees and working on hydroelectric dams in the western states. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater with the 259th Engineer Combat Battalion. As a member of H & S Company, he rebuilt communication lines as allied forces pushed east from the Netherlands into Germany. During the Korean Conflict, of the Cold War, he served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Alaska. Upon discharge, Bob returned to Toledo and worked in radio and television repair. He later worked for C& O Railroad, B&O Railroad, Chessie System, and retired as a clerk from CSX Railroad in 1984. He continued to serve in the Ohio Air National Guard, retiring in 1984. His memberships included Christ Dunberger American Legion Post # 537, Oregon, United Commercial Travelers, and First St. Mark Lutheran Church. Bob was an avid league bowler at Eastern Lanes, and continued his love of radios and electronics as a HAM radio operator with the call letters W.A.8.S.C.R and in his 90's, he made the transition to the computer age, and skyped with distant relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 48 years, Kathleen (Riley); brothers, William Lober and Harley Lober; sisters, Virginia Sandlin, Betty Kohanski, Lorraine Farnham, and Helen Hooks; nephews, Larry Hammel and John Vykopal; and niece, Pamela Hooks. His commanding presence and blessing at family gatherings will be missed by his devoted sister, Barbara Vykopal; nieces and nephews, Marlene, Janet, Bunny, Delpha, Billy, Gary, Vicki, Linda, Jim, Sharon, Laura, Tom, Jeannie, David, Kevin, Diane, Cindy, Nancy, Patty, Michelle, Paul, Terri, Beth, Jon; family friend, Marion Sparks, along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews though loved, too numerous to mention.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 2:00 pm – 8:00pm, where a Dunberger American Legion service will be held at 6:00pm. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 18, 2019 at 10:00 am in First St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1121 Grasser Street, Oregon, where the family will greet friends beginning at 9:00am.
