Obituary

Robert "Bob" Adam McCloskey, a devoted family man, proud veteran, dedicated public servant, and fierce champion for working people, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026. He leaves behind a profound legacy of hard work, selflessness, and an unconditional love that shaped the lives of everyone who knew him.

A Foundation of Resilience

Born in Toledo on August 25, 1945, Bob was the son of Adam Robert and Betty McCloskey. Following his parents' divorce when he was five, Bob and his father moved in with his grandmother in Ironville, a historic East Toledo neighborhood. During grade school, a local priest, Father Blasko, introduced Bob to the Holy Rosary Football Team. This providential meeting sparked a lifelong connection; Father Blasko later performed the wedding ceremony for Bob and his wife, Barb, and Holy Rosary became the parish where Bob raised his children.

Bob learned the values of loyalty, perseverance, and family solidarity in those early years. He graduated from Whitmer High School and began working for Libbey-Owens-Ford in Rossford at age 17. A year later, he was drafted into the United States Navy, proudly serving his country for two years.

A Beautiful Love and Fierce Devotion

Upon returning from his service, Bob's life changed forever when he married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Gall, on September 3, 1969. Together, they shared 55 years of marriage built on faith and unwavering commitment.

Of all his achievements, Bob cherished his wife and children above all else. Determined to provide his children with the opportunities he lacked growing up, he regularly worked multiple jobs to ensure they received a Catholic education and a solid foundation for life.

Bob had an immense love for children, and the McCloskey home was a revolving door for nieces, nephews, and neighborhood friends. Despite exhausting work hours, Bob always found time for his family, coaching his daughters' sports teams and rarely missing a game or recital. Years later, Bob's ultimate dream came true when he and Barbara welcomed their son, a young man he could not have been prouder of.

A Lifetime of Hard Work and Brotherhood

Bob spent 35 years at Libbey-Owens-Ford, where he eventually became a proud, elected Union representative. For many years, he also worked alongside his brothers-in-law at Lawrence's Ottawa Hills Service Station, where he earned the lifelong nickname "Pillsbury Doughboy." Whether selling cars or serving as a proud Free Mason, Bob did whatever it took to provide for his family and support his community.

The First District Councilman: True to His Roots

Bob's care for people naturally extended to civic service. After noticing local parks falling into disrepair, he began advocating for renovations, which led to his involvement with the Lucas County Parks Commission.

His grassroots leadership led to his election as the first East Toledo/South Toledo District Councilman. He proudly served multiple terms, famously insisting on Union-printed materials. His iconic campaign signs-decked out in shamrocks and fluorescent green-became a symbol of his heritage and dedication to the working class. Bob was also an active member of the Lucas County Democratic Party and served as a board member for the East Toledo Family Center.

Scarlet, Gray, and a Soft Heart

Outside of family, Ohio State football brought Bob endless joy. As a legendary Buckeye fan, he passed this passion down to his children and grandchildren. While the rest of the world saw a strong, sometimes intimidating figure who stood up for what was right, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew his softest side. To them, he was pure gentleness.

Gratitude

Bob's children wish to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors and staff at The Oregon Clinic, St. Charles Hospital, and St. Vincent's Hospital. They also share a special thank you to the dedicated staff at Heritage of Waterville, especially Princess Ellis, for her extraordinary compassion.

Family and Legacy

Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Jean; his parents, Adam McCloskey and Betty Slover; his brother, Donald W. McCloskey; and several cherished extended family members.

His spirit lives on through his children: Lori (Shane) Atkinson, Pamela (Jeff) McGarey, and Corey McCloskey. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Gabriel, and Natalie Champagne; Summer McCloskey; and Taylor and Casen McCloskey (and their mother, Alicia Guerra). He also leaves behind his brother, Ronald; his dear friend, Larry Tscherne; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members.

"A father's life is measured not by what he takes from this world, but by what he leaves behind in the hearts of the people he loved the most."
