Obituary

Robert A. Mickens, 87, died on January 25 after several years of declining health. He was born in East Toledo on November 11, 1916 to Albert and Anna Mickens. Bob graduated from Waite High School in 1934 and worked for a time in his father's grocery store, Mickens Market, on Valleywood Ave. In 1940 he married Betty Sabo at Holy Rosary Church and they had a son, Robert Steven, who died of cancer in 1999. After returning from service in Germany during World War II he was emloyed by the US Government at the Rossford Arsenal. He and his wife moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1963 when he was transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal (Illinois). Ten years later they semi-retired in Las Vegas, NV where Bob worked for several years at the Jai Alai Palace of the MGM Grand Hotel. They returned to their native Toledo area in 1991. Bob relished gardening and outdoor work. In 1996, after a visit to Hungary with his wife, he had the first of two hip replacement surgeries and his health began steadily to decline, but he found hope in his faith. In fact, Bob converted to Roman Catholicism before his marriage and was fervent in his devotions and church obligations, believing that the Church could make a positive impact on people's lives. He leaves to memory his wife of 63 years, Betty; sister, Ruth Whitmore; brothers, Howard, Junior and Albert; grandchildren Robert Carl Mickens of Rome, Italy, William Steven (Beth Marie) Mickens of South Charleston, Ohio, and Elizabeth Ann Mickens of Las Vegas, Nevada; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, as well as other siblings. There will be no visitation and funeral services will be private. Interment will take place in Lake Township Cemetery. Arragements by the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Coy Road Chapel. Memorial contributions in Bob's name can be sent to the American Diabetes Association. Visitation: Visitation Times
