Robert Anthony Rudess Sr., 81, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully with his wife present Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio due to neurological complications. Robert was born September 13, 1940, in Toledo, Ohio to his Slovenian father Anthony and Slovak mother Catherine (Bicanovsky) Rudess. Bob attended Good Shepherd Catholic Grade School. During this time, he had a large newspaper route. Bob graduated in 1958 from the former Macomber High School, where he studied commercial art, was co-editor of the yearbook, and played varsity baseball.
After graduation, he played Federation Baseball. Bob served six years in the United States Army Reserves. He was employed by Owens-Illinois – Libbey Glass Division for 30 years as a commercial artist and in management within the New Product Development Department and retired in 1991. Bob owned Anthony's Restaurant for four years until his health declined due to kidney disease.
On June 23, 1962, Bob married Sharon Graffeo at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June. Together they had five children and he loved his wife and family unconditionally. Bob was an intelligent, and a well-rounded, knowledgeable, generous and kind man. At times, he liked to be a jokester as well. Bob enjoyed art, design, history, politics, sports, and hunted and fished with his brother, Paul. In his part-time, he created fishing lures and penny wooden hockey boards that he sold. Bob was the general contractor and did much of the work when their home was built in Oregon, Ohio. Throughout his younger years, Bob coached all of the sports that his children were involved in, along with other teams through the Oregon Recreation Department. He was an assistant junior varsity hockey coach at Clay High School too. Bob and Sharon were longtime season ticket holders of the Detroit Red Wings Hockey Team also.
In 1979, Bob became involved in the Oregon Democratic Club, where he held many offices and was Precinct Committeeman and Ward Chairman. He sat on the Lucas County Executive Board for numerous years until the present time. Bob supported his wife Sharon throughout her political endeavors, as well as other candidates and elected officials. He volunteered throughout the community at many fundraisers, festivals and events too. Bob and Sharon enjoyed visiting Hollywood Casino where they met numerous individuals who became dear friends. Additional memberships included: St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Oregon Senior Center, ALBA (Italian social club) and NRA.
Following the death of their son Michael in 1986, Bob and Sharon traveled to Hunter Army Field in Savannah, Georgia for many years to attend the Army Ranger Ball in his honor. He was a Gold Star Parent.
Bob is survived by his wife Sharon; children, Robert Rudess Jr., Michelle Rudess-Dodd, Melissa (David Bagnall) Rudess, and Anthony (Barbie) Rudess; grandchildren, Joseph (Natalie) Edwards, Melinda (Justin) Scofield, Randall Churchwell, Eric, Anthony, and Carey Anne Dodd, Giavanna (Gordi Myer), and Rocco Rudess, and Lillianna Rudess; great-grandchildren, Anjel Vazquez, Angelina Dodd, Vinny, Savino, and Gino Scofield, Lorenzo, and Ezariah Edwards; sisters-in-law, Janice (Bob) Flack, Janet (Larry) Foels, and Carolyn Edwards; brother-in-law, Ken CaHow; along with many nephews, nieces, cousins, and exchange students; especially Juan Carlos (Pilar) Sandoval and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; siblings, Paul Rudess and Sharon CaHow; in-laws, Joe and Hazel Graffeo; and brothers-in-law, Danny Graffeo, and Marty Edwards.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held at St. Ignatius Church, 212 N. Stadium Road., Oregon, Monday, April 11, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment: Allen Township Cemetery, Williston. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. Ignatius Catholic Church or the Oregon Senior Center.
