Bob (Buzz) was released from his courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, November 13, 201o in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born on April 12, 1927 in Bellevue, OH; the ninth of eleven children born to Henry and Annabelle Shelley. The family moved to Norwalk, OH when he was a child. Buzz left high school to join the Navy, and served on the Destroyer, USS John R. Craig. Upon an Honorable Discharge, he returned to school, lettered in football and basketball, and graduated in 1947. He and Joyce O'Dell began dating during practice for the 1947 spring play and married on October 9, 1948.
Buzz was very proud of their children and spouses: Michael (Diane), Robert Jr. (Kathy), Valeeta (Keith) Fager, Maureen King, and Carolyn (Jim) Beckman. He enjoyed grandchildren: Brian, Tom, and Meredith Shelley. Brooke Morris, Alissa Weizer, Shelley Nyitray, Kyle Fager, Josh King, Alex and Nathan Beckman. Great grandchildren are Owen, Bailey, Laney, Calin, Cade, and Hayden. Another great granddaughter will join them in March. He also leaves beloved nieces and nephews, valued friends, and Swiss Golf League buddies. He was predeceased by his parents, six brothers, four sisters and many close friends.
Moving to Toledo in 1953, Buzz was employed by the Nickle Plate RR, Gulf Oil Refinery, and Haughton Elevator, retiring at 59 from Champion Spark Plug's Industrial Engineering Department. He then served as the substitute Bailiff in the Oregon Municipal Court, and Ranger at the Maumee Bay State Park golf course, until last spring.
Buzz officiated high school football and basketball for almost thirty years. In 1972, he served as Umpire for the Ohio State semi-final football game between Youngstown Cardinal Mooney and Cincinnati Moeller. He was recommended to officiate in the Mid-Am conference but, a serious knee injury forced his retirement.
Memberships included the Seaway Commanders of SPEBSA, National Management Assoc., Toledo Swiss Singers, OHSAA, GBU, Swiss Men's Golf League,
GAF, American Legion Post #537, and Life Member in the Oregonian Club. He was a trustee of the original East Side YMCA and an Ombudsman in St. Charles E.R. Buzz also sang in church choirs for 56 years.
The family feels immeasurable gratitude for the loving care given by the nurses, doctors, and staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Life was great, filled with dancing, football, golf, playing cards, yard work and plenty of ice cream.
Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel 440 S. Coy Rd., on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 from 2-8 pm. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11 am on Wednesday at Memorial United Church of Christ Starr Ave. & Plymouth St., Toledo, OH with luncheon served immediately after the service. Suggestions for memorials are Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Memorial United Church of Christ.
