Robert Slovak, 86, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away in his home on September 15, 2004. He was born on July 14, 1918, to Martin and Lizabeth Slovak. Robert was a World War II veteran serving as a gunnery officer on B-24's and flew combat missions over northern Italy, southern Germany and Yugoslavia. He received Air Medal and Certificate of Valor for flying extra combat missions. Robert retired as Lieutenant Colonel of the US Air Force. He was a charter member of the Northwood VFW and lifetime member of the Genoa-Clay Center VFW. During the 1960's Robert was Air Force project officer at Camp Perry during the National Rifle Matches. He was a graduate of the University of Toledo and the University of Michigan. Robert coached in Morenci, MI from 1946-1951, where his team was state football champs in 1949, with defensive and offensive records intact after more than 50 years. Robert was the first football coach at Macomber High School and taught until his retirement from the Toledo Public School System. He also worked as an employment interviewer for the US Government Employment Agency, milkman for Page Dairy, special agent with Ohio National Life Insurance Co., special agent for agriculture for US Government. Robert officiated at football, baseball, basketball, softball and track events. In retirement, he served in the Peace Corps in Jamaica. Robert was State Senior Olympics Champion in tennis, discus, football throw, softball throw and 100 yd. Dash. He participated in Outward Bound in mountain climbing and kayaking; played tennis at the Laurel Hills Tennis Club and softball at the East Toledo Senior Center until called up to the truly major league.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Ruth; daughters, Liza Hirzel, Nancy Slovak and Bobbie (Ken) Farison; grandchildren, Henry and Jacob Hirzel, Nick and Kylie Farison; brother, Emil Slovak, Honolulu, Hawaii; nephew, Rudy Harnacek, Halifax, Nova Scotia and several other nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. An informal memorial gathering is planned for Sunday, September 19, 2004, from 2-4:00 p.m. at Bayside Boardwalk, 2759 Seaman Rd., Oregon, OH. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements by the the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Homes.
