Obituary

Robert Troje, age 94, passed away suddenly on March 4, 2025. He was born on November 19, 1930, in Mosel Gottschee, Yugoslavia.

Robert lived an extraordinary life as a son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born in the Alps of Mosel Gottschee, he spent his early years on his family's quaint farm. However, his childhood was abruptly interrupted on April 6, 1941, when Nazi forces invaded. With only the clothes on their backs, his family was forced into resettlement villages and later to Sterntal Concentration Camp. When World War II ended in Yugoslavia in May 1945, the Gottscheers were expelled from the land their ancestors had called home for over 600 years.

Robert's family relocated to Maria Wörth, Austria, where, at the age of 17, he yearned for more than a life of farm labor. Fueled by a spirit of adventure and resilience, he signed a contract to work for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. His journey took him to Cannes, France, where he boarded the SS Nea Hellas and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in April 1948. From there, he made his way to Brandon, Manitoba.

In November 1954, Robert married the love of his life, Miss Irene Wilk. Together, they shared 70 years of love and partnership. In 1956, they moved to Toledo, Ohio, in pursuit of the American Dream—to work hard and build a future for their family.

Robert was a devoted father to his four daughters, raising them with love and discipline. Having lived through the atrocities of World War II, he wanted his daughters to grow into strong, independent women.

A dedicated and hardworking man, Robert was employed at Toledo Shipyard and later retired as a millwright from Willys Overland Jeep. An entrepreneur at heart, he founded "Bob's New & Repair Construction" and invested in rental real estate.

While he worked hard, Robert also knew how to enjoy life. He traveled the world with family and friends, creating cherished memories. He was an excellent cook, known for his pig roasts, party chicken, pickled cauliflower, canned green tomatoes, homemade kielbasa, and soups—dishes that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Robert was quick-witted, possessing a photographic memory and an encyclopedic knowledge of various subjects. He spoke four languages fluently. With a deep-rooted love for nature and animals, he enjoyed raising pets, especially his beloved dog, Caesar. A master organic gardener, he grew grapes and fruit trees, sharing the abundance with family and neighbors.

His commitment to physical fitness was evident in his 30-year membership at the YMCA. He also loved boating and fishing on Lake Erie, often taking family and friends on adventures. A self-taught craftsman, he excelled at everything he set his mind to, embodying fairness, honesty, and perseverance.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Konrad and Helen Troje; his brothers, Karl Bachmayer and Ernest Bachmayer; his sisters, Albina Winding and Irma Lefholtz; his twin daughters, Ann Maria and Mary Ann Troje; his grandchildren, Levee Segur, Katie Morrissey, Maxwell Morrissey, Benjamin Morrissey; and his son-in-law, Michael Phillips.

Robert is survived by his loving wife Irene, Diane (Mel) Marek, Patty (Bob) Morrissey, Linda Phillips, Brenda Troje. Grandchildren: Chrism Hoisington, Travis Segur, Erin (Derek) Besgrove, Carolyn (John) Berryman, (Darah) Morrissey, (Kaddie) Morrissey, Brookelyn Phillips (Issac), and Lucas Phillips. great-grandchildren: DeVante and Terrell Johns, Kyzer Segur, Bryce Aubree and Maya Besgrove, Willow and Myles Berryman, Wilde and Recker Morrissey, Weslee and Benna Morrissey, Owen Swain; great-great-grand child, Maloa Johns; sister, Maria and many extended family members.
