Ronald Stephen "Buck" Demko passed away peacefully on December 9, 2007, after a courageous 5 week battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Irene Kohany and Joseph Demko on November 13, 1934. Buck graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952. Buck served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Germany. After returning from a 2 year tour in the Army, he met the "Love of his Life" Verna Mae Picott and they married on June 6, 1959. Buck returned to school and became a 1960 graduate of Bowling Green University with a degree in Education. Buck later received his Masters Degree from the University of Toledo, as he often stated, "I was a straight A graduate student without ever purchasing a book". Buck began his teaching career in 1961 at the newly opened McTigue Junior High School in the Toledo Public School system where he continued to teach for 34 years until his retirement. Buck enjoyed seeing many of his former students around the Toledo area and hearing about their endeavors and families. Tiger Demko, Bucks son said "Not only did Buck enjoy teaching but he also loved playing golf with all his friends in the Tuesday night golf league at Collins Park, playing cards and one of his favorite pastimes going to Raceway Park". During his summers Buck maintained several different jobs including painter and iron worker. In 1967 Buck began his favorite part-time position, bartending at the Toledo Club. Bucky loved this job and enjoyed the interaction of all of the members at the club. Kathy Niehaus, Buckys daughter stated "He was often the bartender of choice for many of the members family gatherings. He forged many lifelong friendships with many of the members and staff". Bucky remained the longest tenured employee at the club until his death. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephens Parish where he was a past member of the parish council and served as a trustee. He was also an inductee in the Birmingham Hall of Fame, a member of the VFW 4906 and a Cardinal Stritch Athletic Booster. Uppa loved watching his grandchildren play in all of their sporting events and school endeavors and was very involved in every aspect of their lives. Buck was welcomed into heaven by his parents; brother, John; sister, Arlene Demko and sisters-in-law Betty Stewart and Dorothy Demko. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Verna Mae.; daughter, Kathy (Rick) Niehaus, son Ronald "Tiger" (Lynne) Demko, grandchildren, Zack, Ally and Maddy Niehaus, Trey and Jenna Demko, brother Joe Demko, brother Richard (Pauline) Demko, sister, Margie Demko, sister Sandi (Dick) Capatosta and brothers-in-law Al Stewart and Don Picott and several nieces and nephews. Family and Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy Road (Coy and Starr) Oregon, Ohio, 419-698-4301 on Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-9 p.m. with the recitation of the Rosary at 4 p.m. and a VFW service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin with prayers in the funeral home on Friday at 9:45 a.m. and proceed to St. Stephen Catholic Church for a Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery. Buck was a loving husband, father, Uppa, son, brother and a friend to all friends. His unique sense of humor will be dearly missed by all.
