Ross H. Mergenthaler, 91, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Ross was born in Gibsonburg, Ohio on August 14, 1923 to Clyde and Anna Marie (Diels) Mergenthaler. In December, 1942, Ross was drafted into service and assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He completed radio operator's school at Scott Field, Illinois and was assigned to the 500th Bomb Group of the 73rd Bombardment Wing of the 20th Air Force in the Pacific. He served as a radio operator on a B-29 aircraft operating from Spain in the Marianas Islands. He completed 37 combat missions, 35 of which were targets on the Japanese Islands. Ross participated in the Veteran Pacific Campaign, the eastern Island Mandate Campaign, and the Air Offensive against the Japanese Homeland. For his service, Ross was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement and five Air Medal awards for meritorious achievement. After World War II, he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and was called up for 21 months during the Korean War, serving in Germany. Ross worked 35 years for lime plants in Gibsonburg, Ohio, retiring in 1983 from Pfizer Incorporated. Ross was an avid amateur radio operator (NS8C). He conducted testing sessions for new amateur licensees and for amateurs to upgrade to higher license grades for 15 years on a monthly basis. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Toledo and member of Dunberger American Legion Post, VFW Post 4906, Distinguished Flying Cross Society, and Gibsonburg Lodge F & AM.
Ross is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lana, whom he married July 8, 1965; brother, Charles (Esther) Mergenthaler along with many loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helen Boots; and brother, John Mergenthaler.
