Ruth Duvendack, 99, passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Perrysburg. She was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1915 to Cecilia and William G. Miller. Ruth graduated from Scott High School in 1933. Ruth married Roy Duvendack on June 17, 1939 at St. Paul 's Lutheran Church on S. Erie Street . They met on a dance floor where Ruth taught ballroom dancing and spent 40 years together until his death in 1979. The Trianon, Luna Pier and Eagles were favorite places to dance. Saturday nights were always special for them until Roy passed away. Ruth began teaching dance, at age 17, in Paul LaFevre's Dance Studio at the Womens Club downtown as well as Arthur Murray's School of Dance on Adams Street. She was employed at Owens-Illinois from 1936 to 1942. While raising her son and daughter she was a home worker for Curtin and Pease. She also worked three years at Woodlawn Cemetery in the office. In 1962 she accepted a permanent secretarial position at Curtin and Pease until 1975 when she accepted a position at Award & Premium Division of Osterman Jewelers. Ruth retired in 1981. The next ten years were spent caring for many little ones for families in Ottawa Hills. They were members of the Eagles #197 on Jackman Road . Ruth is a member of St. Paul 's Lutheran Church , downtown.
Historical Woodlawn Cemetery has played a wonderful part in Roy and Ruth's married life. Roy worked 43 years at the cemetery, starting at age 17. He was promoted to Grounds Manager and asked to move into a house on the cemetery grounds to provide 24 hr. care. Roy, Ruth and Charles (4 yrs. old), moved into that home in Sept., 1946 and lived there for 27 years. A daughter, Marilyn, came along in 1952, both children graduated from McKinley & DeVilbiss High School . Roy moved on to become Superintendent before retiring in 1972, Chuck retired from Envirosafe and Marilyn graduated from the University of Cincinnati Law School. She has her own law office in Dayton , Ohio . Roy passed away in January, 1979. Ruth will be buried next to Roy on the family lot.
Ruth is survived by her son, Charles (Sharon); daughter, Marilyn Donoff; grandchildren, Sandra (Tim) Lutz, Cincinnati, Ohio, Stephanie (Dan) Killen, Marietta, Georgia, Charlie (Angi) Duvendack; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Gabriella Duvendack, Zachary, Olivia, Ian and Mia Lutz. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Viola Gallemore and brother, George Miller.
Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. , on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place in the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:00 pm , where the family will greet friends beginning at 12 noon. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery . Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Ruth's memory are asked to consider the St. Paul 's Lutheran Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
