In Loving Memory of Samuel Lee Clay

Samuel Lee Clay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024, in Genoa, OH, surrounded by family. He was born on September 1, 1932, in Grays Branch, KY, to his loving parents Lewis and Marie (Griffith) Clay. Sam was one of ten children, including Garnet and Robert, who he lovingly leaves behind. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, and 3 brothers.

On April 7, 1956, Sam married the love of his life, Doris Boos, and they shared 67 beautiful years together. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Brewer and Tina (Matt) Cox, who were the light of Sam's life. He adored his grandchildren, Jennifer (Martin) Smolenski, Danielle (Danielle) Brewer, Autumn (Josh) Beam, and Dakotah Cox. Sam was also joyfully "Papa Sam" to his great-grandson Tyler Smolenski.

A dedicated member of the Hope Community Church, Sam found solace and community within its walls. Throughout his life, he worked diligently as a conductor with CSX Railroad for 44 years, retiring in 1994. His love for God and strong work ethic were evident to all who knew him.

Sam was a man of many passions and interests. He found joy in fishing, hunting, gardening, listening to music, whittling, and watching baseball with Doris by his side. Known for his storytelling prowess, Sam was a great storyteller who could captivate anyone with his tales. He never met a stranger and had a gift for striking up conversations with ease. His fondness for singing silly songs brought laughter and warmth to those around him. Sam also had a love for animals that was passed on to his family.

Sam's memory will be forever cherished by his family and friends, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
