Sergio "Joe" Ortiz, age 67, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 22, 2008, at St. Charles Mercy Hospital. Joe was born in Brownsville, Texas, the third of the ten children of Esteban and Teresa Ortiz. The Ortiz family moved to Ohio in 1957. Joe grew up in the Toledo area and graduated from Whitmer High School in 1962. Joe joined the United States Marine Corps in 1963 and served 4 years, achieving a rank of Sergeant. Upon his discharge, he joined the Port Clinton Police Department, serving with them for fifteen years. Joe then worked for L.O.F and then Davis Besse in the security departments, retiring in 2002. While in the service, Joe married Anita Montano, his long time sweetheart. They raised their family in Oregon and were proud grandparents. Joe is preceded in death by his brothers, Antonio and Alberto, as well as his parents Esteban and Teresa. He is survived by his children, Randall (Jeanne) Ortiz, Melissa (Bob) Tonkel; his brothers and sisters, Esteban Jr. (Grace), Armando (Dorothy), Maria (Silvero) Castillo, Ida (Armando) Gonzalez, Izzy (Celia), Homero, and Elida (Jerome) Bechstein. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Kelsey, Allison and Megan Ortiz; Ariel and Ethan Tonkel. There will be no visitation and services will be private. Memorial contributions in Joe's name may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Homes.
