Obituary

Sheri A. Caldwell went from the loving arms of her husband, Bill, to our Lord Jesus Christ's loving arms in the early morning of July 10, 2023. She was born on February 10, 1966, to Ron and Linda (Breisacher) Schudel in Toledo, Ohio. She attended St. Thomas Catholic School, where her love for learning, teaching, competing, and inspiring others flourished.

Sheri graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1984. After high school, she graduated from Bowling Green State University, before pursuing her MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. During her early years at Toledo, she met her soulmate, Bill, at a softball game – of course. A few years later, on May 14, 1994, they were married. Their mutual love for competition and sports created a perfect partnership that has survived the test of time and more than a few head-to-head matchups between their favorite teams.

While beginning her career in human resources, she continued to teach undergraduate through doctoral-level classes at the University of Toledo, Lourdes College, Findlay, and Bowling Green. Sheri also found time to co-author four books. To say Sheri was a 'go-getter' is a profound understatement. She spent much of her career in human resources with the Toledo Zoo, the Andersons, Medical Mutual, North Star Steel, and most recently ProMedica. She cherished many of her relationships with co-workers and still kept in contact with many until her death.

Growing up, her love for gymnastics made her a two-time state champion. As a result of this accomplishment, Sheri was invited to the 1980 Olympic trials which she was unable to attend due to the United States boycott of the Olympics. This began a lifelong interest in sports in general. At age 16, she began coaching, which she continued through her late 20's. She also was an accomplished high school track and field athlete. Later in life, she decided to take up long-distance running, which allowed for more time with Bill and offered new challenges. In typical Sheri fashion, she trained hard enough to compete at the highest level, qualifying for and running the 2016 Boston Marathon. The following year presented one of her greatest challenges and accomplishments. After breaking her leg in a skiing accident in Utah, doctors told her she would never run again…of course, they were wrong. Not only did she run again, but she also returned to competing in long-distance events, including duathlons.

Sheri was the definition of "self-motivation." After reaching the pinnacle of her profession and competing at the highest level in her chosen sport, she decided to help others find their inner motivation to reach their health and fitness goals. She returned to the classroom and earned her personal trainer and diet specialist license. Of all her educational achievements, this was one of her most satisfying. During her time as a personal trainer, she was able to help change the lives of many clients and steer them towards a longer, healthier life.

An avid sports fan, Sheri cheered on all the Detroit teams. Closest to her heart, however, was the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. She attended hundreds of Notre Dame Games as far away as Ireland. She shared this love for Notre Dame with her mother, who attended many games with her. She even talked Bill into going from time to time! Sheri also had a genuine love for the game of baseball. One of her favorite accomplishments was watching a game in every major league ballpark, thirty stadiums in 5 years.

Sheri found joy and meaning in everything she did, regardless of the circumstances she faced. She loved spending time with friends and family and always went out of her way to make everyone feel special. Sheri looked forward to the Holidays and loved spending time with her family. Her strong Christian faith and love for her savior, Jesus Christ, sustained her throughout her life. We take refuge in the knowledge that she is resting in eternal peace and comfort in the arms of our Lord. Until we meet again, Sheri…Play like a champion today!

Preceding her in death are her father, Ron Schudel; her father-in-law, Dewey Caldwell, her grandparents, Manny and Nettie Breisacher; and her beloved chow chow, Jerry.

Surviving are her husband and best friend of 29 years, Bill; her favorite running partner Myles; mother and stepfather, Linda and Dave St. John; half-sister, Ronni (Joe) Zona and their daughters; mother-in-law, Janet Caldwell; brother-in-law, Mike (Heidi) Caldwell, sister-in-law, Terry (Terry) Mays; their sons, Skylar, and Christian and many loving family members and friends.
