IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Ann
Balla
September 18, 1935 – August 10, 2023
Shirley A. Balla, 87, formerly of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Otterbein of Pemberville. Shirley was born September 18, 1935, in Genoa, Ohio, to Emery and Irene (Schumacher) Wilka. In 1953, Shirley graduated from Waite High School. On January 23, 1960, she married William Balla Jr. Shirley was a member of Memorial United Church of Christ for 75 years, serving as organist for over 63 years and also served choir director for many years. Over the years she worked at, Owens- Illinois, was a secretary, and then was a medical transcriptionist working until she was in her late 70's. She also was a well-known piano teacher, teaching students in her East Toledo home for many years, and she was the pianist for the Cardinal Chorus.
Shirley was a notoriously fun grandma letting her grandchildren drive in cemeteries well before they were old enough, betting with them on sporting events, playing cards (not liking to lose) and taking them on trips to the Amish country. Shirley loved polka music, dancing, bowling, and she made the world's best stuffed cabbage (don't tell Packos). Further Shirley loved going for drives and walks in Toledo area metroparks and appreciated the chance to see Ohio's wildlife.
Shirley is survived by her son, William (Karen) Balla III; grandchildren, William (Kathryn) Balla IV, Philip Balla, and Elizabeth (Joshua) Curavo; great-grandchildren, William V., Jonah, Hayley, Emma, Joselynn, Evelynn, and Macklin; sister, Carol (Kenneth) Lagger; along with many nieces, nephews, loving family members and friends. Preceded in death by her parents; and husband.
