On December 27, 2014, Stephen Francis 'œSkip' Nagy, age 92, passed peacefully into eternal life with his children by his side.
He was born to Nicholas and Mary (Juhasz) Nagy on February 8, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio. After graduating from Macomber Vocational High School in 1941, Steve enrolled at Toledo University to study mechanical engineering. Then Uncle Sam called him into service in 1942.
Steve proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a Topographical Draftsman for the Army. He achieved the rank of Technician Fourth Grade, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
In the early days of his Army training, Steve met and befriended a Chicagoan named Earl Puls. When Earl'™s sister Irene came for a visit and Steve met her, they hit it off right away. After a date or two, Irene went back to Chicago and the men shipped out. Thus began a four year journey of friendship blossoming into romance via the US mail.
On July 5, 1947, Steve and Irene were married at St. Stephen Catholic Church. After a brief honeymoon, they moved in with Steve'™s family while he worked and built their home. Just before their first anniversary, their son was born. Their dream home was completed and move-in ready in 1949, and their daughter was born in time for Christmas in 1950. Steve and Irene enjoyed their home together until just after their 65th wedding anniversary in 2012. Irene passed away on July 19 of that year.
After his discharge from the Army, Steve went to work at the Auto-Lite. In 1960, he began a career at General Mills, retiring in 1987. Steve worked at the General Mills Federal Credit Union during his years at General Mills and into retirement.
Steve and his brothers operated the Nagy Brothers Archery Shop during the 1950s. Irene helped them too by fletching arrows. Steve and Irene belonged to the Mudjaw Bowman Archery Club where they honed their skills as archers. In the fall, Steve went bow hunting with his brothers and friends. Over the years, he came home with a few deer and lots of stories and jokes.
Steve enjoyed making people laugh, so he always had a fresh joke or humorous story ready for the telling. He called himself, 'œthe poor man'™s Bob Hope.' He was blessed with a good sense of humor and a kind and generous heart.
Steve was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Catholic Church (now Epiphany of the Lord) and was active in the Altar Rosary and St. Vincent de Paul societies. He was a long time member of the Fatima Council of the Knights of Columbus, and a charter member of the Mother Theresa Council. A man of deep faith, he lived what he believed and graciously gave of his time, talent, and treasure to those in need.
Steve is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steve Jr. and Penny Nagy, and his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Paul Thompson; grandchildren Christina Nagy and Michael Nagy, US Navy; great-grandchildren Cadi and Jack Emerson; sister and brother-in-law, Veronica and Ray Maciolek, as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; wife Irene; brothers Joseph, Nicholas, Elmer, and F. Richard Nagy; sisters Gazella Hrivnyak, Mary Ondrus, and Helen Rutkai. So others may learn, Steve donated his body to the University of Toledo Medical College.
