Stephen K. Suto, 81 of Oregon, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. Steve was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 10, 1939 to Steven Allen and Evelyn E. (Schwierking) Suto. Steve was a 1957 graduate of Clay High School and a 2 year letterman of the baseball team and in 1957 was the 1st basemen for the Great Lakes League Championship Team. Steve also played for the East Toledo Rockets winning the City Championship for two years, and 3 years after high school. Steve also served as captain for two years, receiving All-Star Defense honors for 4 years.
Steve played semi-professional hockey for Toledo's own Maumee Bruins from 1960-1964. He was recognized as Most Valuable Defenseman for two years winning the City Championships for three consecutive years. Steve was also a part of the very first University of Toledo Hockey Program and Team from 1964-1966 and was voted Most Popular Player. Steve also started coaching after high school, to include Bantam, Pee Wee, Squirt and Mite Hockey Leagues. He also served as head coach for the first St. Francis De Sales Varsity Hockey Team for two years. Steve also, coached many of his own children's sports teams of the years.
Steve stayed close to the sports scene by beginning a very prestigious officiating career putting in 50 years of service to Football, 49 years of baseball, 39 years to Softball, 11 years to Basketball and 10 years to Ice Hockey. He was recognized by both the OHSAA and MHSSA for his contribution to high school athletics. Steve continued his football officiating career working in the Semi-Pro Mid-Continental Football League for the Toledo Thunder, serving as Crew Chief for three years. Steve was also selected by the league to officiate the All-Star Game on June 3rd 1995 at the University of Dayton and then the Championship Game in November 1995 in Racine, Wisconsin.
Some of his officiating highlights include High School Sectional District, Regional Baseball and Softball Tournaments. Steve also officiated as a member of the American Softball Association (ASA) and the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) to include several ASA, USSSA Fast Pitch, Slow Pitch Regional and State Tournaments. To highlight, Steve worked the USSSA Fast Pitch World Tournaments in Canton, Michigan from 1999-2002 and officiated the World Championship Game in 2000. Steve also worked several leagues in Toledo, Oregon, Bowling Green, Clyde, Bellevue, Walbridge and Sylvania.
Steve retired in 1989 from The Dana Corporation after 30 years of employment. Following retirement, Steve was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame in 2005 and served as a member of the board always willing to help and promote the Hungarian Birmingham Neighborhood. Steve was a proud parent of all his children and never missed one event they participated in whether it was sports, dance, gymnastics, awards and recognition. He loved them dearly.
Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, MaryAnn (Dumas) Suto; their 7 children, Stephanie Ann (Wayne) Seger, Daniel Michael (Renee) Suto, Dr. John Steven Malcom (Dr. Billie Jo Kaska) Suto, Gina Ellen (Danny) Erickson, Patrick William Edward Suto, Brandon Scott Joseph (Heather) Suto, Renee' Marie (John) Staler, 17 grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Troy (Seger), Angela (Andy) Ramsey, Daniel Michael Jr. Suto Jr. , Johnelle, Victoria and Blade (Suto), Brooke, Grant (Erickson), Bobby, Timothy and Savannah (Suto), Stephen Kay Robert, Hunter and Beth (Suto), Justin, Nicholas (Staler) ; 2 great grandchildren, Owen Seger and Maren Ramsey, Step-brother Larry (Carol) Holt.
Visitation will be held at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Thursday and Friday, Dec 17th & 18th from 2pm to 8pm. There will be a scripture service held on Friday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:30 AM at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 212 N. Stadium Road, Oregon. Interment will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery.
