Thornton Downey "Frank", Sr., 82, passed away on August 5, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on April 22, 1930 in Lowmoor, Virginia to Thornton and Myrtle (Kelly) Downey-Smith and was affectionately referred to as "Sonny" by him parents and siblings. Frank was a veteran of both the Army and the Navy. He worked at Libbey Owens Ford for 37 years before retiring in 1990. Frank was a lifetime member of the Glass Workers International Association. His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them as well as watching baseball.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce; children, David (Rose) Downey, Karen (Lloyd) Wright, Sharon (Steve) Jones, Jackie (Tom) Schumaker; daughter-in-law, Debbie Downey; brothers, John (Audrey) Smith and Darrel (Ronnie) Smith; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Claude Smith; son, Thornton 'œFrank' Downey, Jr.; and brother, Eugene Downey.
Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 2-9 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Saturday in the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Lake Township cemetery. Memorials in Thornton'™s name may be directed to the charity of the donor'™s choice.
