Obituary

Tim Dugan of Toledo, OH (Oregon, OH) lost a hard-fought battle with cancer on Wednesday November 3, 2021. Tim, known as "OPTLawyer" online, or by most as simply "Dugan" was a faithful friend, a loving son, and a great man. Tim opened his home weekly for gatherings of friends (and friends he hadn't yet met) to play board games or poker for decades. He loved entertaining and had a passion for cooking from a young age. Before celebrity chefs were commonplace, Tim was watching subtitled Japanese episodes of Iron Chef. His writing talents were also honed early when he started a newspaper for his 3rd grade class, wrote cartoon fan-fiction that included his real-life friends, and eventually worked for the high school newspaper. Tim graduated from Clay High School in 2000 and went on to get his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Toledo College of Law in 2007. He worked as an Appellate attorney with much success for many years and had the pinnacle of his professional experience while arguing on two separate occasions before the Supreme Court of Ohio. Tim worked for Groth & Associates, and later served as a Staff Attorney for the honorable Judge Stacy L. Cook. Tim was an integral part of the courtroom utilizing his well-honed research and writing skills on multi-faceted civil cases as well as criminal case research on constitutional issues on all levels of criminal charges including Capital offenses. He loved the law, but more so he loved helping others, be it professionally by assisting his clients or other lawyers, or personally. He became active in advocating and fundraising for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and sharing his personal journey online so that it might help others. Tim had a great sense of humor, appreciated a good bow-tie, and loved to laugh. Everywhere Tim went, he touched hundreds of lives and left people feeling cared for. Whether it was while serving weekly at CedarCreek Church helping with child check-in over the past 13 years, or photographing and keeping records for the Toledo Ohio Greater Area (TOGA) Ultimate Frisbee League, or simply streaming video games to his online community. He wore his heart on his sleeve and wasn't shy to express joy. After he won his first trial for a friend, and making sure nobody was looking for professional reasons, he literally jumped on his client and wrapped his arms (and legs) around them. Even though his cancer battle meant repeated hospital stays, he was loved by the staff who got to know him and was so encouraging to them, that Mercy Health asked if they could write an article about him. He gladly obliged and (figuratively this time) jumped on the opportunity to love on others despite his personal struggles. His hospitality and friendship reached beyond racial, gender, age, or social status boundaries. Tim loved others deeply. When asked what he wanted to do with his assets, Tim's only response was he wanted to make sure his friends were cared for and knew they were loved. There were literally thousands of online comments and well-wishes, memories shared, and prayers given on Tim's behalf. Though this is a tough loss, Tim was bringing people together from all walks of life and from across the country even in his last days. In an effort to honor Tim's wishes and passions, in lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (https://nami.org/About-NAMI/Donate-to-NAMI). Visitation will be at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 South Coy Rd., Oregon, OH, 43616 on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 2:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. The family will also greet friends at CedarCreek Church's Perrysburg Campus 29129 Lime City Rd., Perrysburg, OH, 43551 on Wednesday November 10, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ben Snyder presiding. A graveside service and interment will be held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his mother Becky Dugan, and is survived by his father Tom Dugan, his birth-mother Christine Farmer, his half-brother James Farmer, and his much-loved cat (Tina). Tim was 39 years old.
