Virginia Ann Imhoff, 95, died at home in Avon Lake, Ohio surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. Virginia was born May 23, 1925 in Norwalk, Ohio to Lucille and Carlton Schafer. Virginia and husband Bob resided in Oregon, Ohio for over 40 years where she was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.
Virginia's childhood was spent in West Virginia where she eventually married her high school sweetheart, Robert N. Imhoff in 1948 in Charleston, WV. Virginia's life-long profession of teaching began with graduation from St. Mary of the Springs College, now Ohio Dominican University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1947. She taught in Columbus, OH, Vandergrift, PA, Racine, WI, Oak Harbor and Genoa, OH. She especially loved teaching the primary aged children and most of her teaching career was in kindergarten through third grade in public and parochial schools. She received her Master's Degree from the University of Toledo in 1974 and worked for the Ottawa County Board of Education from 1974-1985 as an Elementary Supervisor and Curriculum Director. She was a certified reading specialist and devoted much of her time to children with reading problems. Virginia was the Right to Read Director in Ottawa County and active in the International Reading Association. She was instrumental in establishing the Vacationland Chapter of the International Reading Association in Ottawa County.
After retirement in 1985, Virginia was involved in several ministries at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and a member of the Altar Rosary Society and St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary. She was a volunteer for the Toledo Chapter of the American Red Cross for ten years.
Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and always looked forward to family gatherings and celebrations. She cherished time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling to their homes and joining them on many family vacations. She and Bob loved to garden, read, travel, play cards and dance, always enjoying the friendship and company of their many friends.
Virginia is survived by her four children, her sons Steven (Karen), Fairfax, VA, and Peter, Medford, NJ, her daughters Laura Thomas (Ronald Szegedi), Perrysburg, OH, and Susan Bement, Avon Lake, OH, daughter-in-law, Kathryn Eckhart, Raleigh, NC, and grandchildren, Michelle Thomas, Michael Thomas, Kristen (Michael) Schmitt, Kaitlyn Imhoff, Sarah (Ben) Imhoff Abramowitz, Bradley Bement, and great-grandchildren, Avery and Audrey Thomas, Austin and Ava Schmitt and Adeline Abramowitz, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Robert, her parents, grandson Michael Imhoff, son-in-law Don Bement and her sisters, Elizabeth Wittmershaus and Frances Blake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 28th at the Epiphany of the Lord St. Thomas Aquinas Parish 712 White Street, Toledo at 10:00 am with visitation before Mass at 9:00 am. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
