Wallace D. "Wally" Purkey, Jr., 85, of formerly of Northwood, Ohio passed away peacefully Friday, August 13, 2021 at Landings of Oregon. Wally was born December 28, 1935 in Stony Ridge, Ohio to Wallace D. Sr. and Lena (Hamman) Purkey. He graduated from Lake Local High School in 1952 where he met the love of his life Ruth Butcher. They married April 17, 1955 in Moline United Methodist Church and honeymooned in Michigan. Wally worked at Gulf Oil in Toledo as a machinist prior joining his dad in selling property insurance. Purkey Insurance was founded in the family home in 1952. The business grew and moved into their first agency building on Woodville Road in Northwood, Ohio in 1972. Wally retired in 2001 after 35 years in business. Wally and Ruth traveled the country and loved being outdoors. He was an avid photographer and built a small business, Images by Wally showcasing his photography and participated in art shows across the Midwest. At age 70, he became an avid cycler and rode thousands of miles per year. He biked many miles in Tucson, Arizona where he and Ruth spent much of their retirement. In addition, he was an avid reader of history, enjoyed popcorn and the Detroit Tigers! Wally is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth; children, Robin (Steve) VanGorder and Justin (Anna) Purkey; siblings, Craig (Shirley) Purkey and Amber Jean (Nate) Eudaly; grandchildren Megan (J.) Dianda, Devin (Morgan) VanGorder, Kyle (April) Purkey, Tyler (Kerri) Purkey; five great-grandchildren and one on the way! He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road Thursday August 19, 2021 from 1:00 pm until time of funeral service at 4:00 pm.
