Obituary

Walter H. Young Jr. May 3, 1929 - Feb. 9, 2009 Walter H. Young, 79, was born on the East Side of Toledo on May 3, 1929, on Dearborn Ave. Walter's passions were many and one that was close to his heart was the Masons. Walter was a Past Master of Paragon Lodge, a Past High Priest of Toledo Port Lawrence Chapter, Past Illustrious Master Vistula Council and member Eu-Tah Commandry. He was a dedicated teacher and took pride in his memorization and teaching. He was a very involved member of High Twelve for many years. Walter was active in the East Toledo Republican Party and enjoyed his political debates. He was a true American Patriot and loved his country's history. No one could take him in trivial pursuit. He loved his country with a passion and was one that became emotional hearing the Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful. The pride he took in his community and the East Side can not be matched. Walter was a member of First St. Johns Lutheran Church for 55 years where served on Church Council as an Elder. He served in the past as a Sunday school teacher. Walt loved his memories of Waite High School. He was a member of the basketball, golf and football teams and the last state championship teams of 1945-46. He is a member of The Waite Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Michigan for two years and was a member of the Michigan football team. Although he left after 2 years to begin working with his father, Walter Sr., he always bled the Maize and Blue and followed them religiously. He did not care much for that team down in Columbus. His professional career began with his father with their Toledo Mack truck distributorship on Michigan and Lafayette. Walter and his brother, Richard and brother-in-law, Carroll helped run the distributorship for 29 years. Walter was drafted in the U.S. Army in May 2, 1951, and served at Ft. Lee, Virginia. He was discharged from active military service on May 1, 1953. Walter was a corporal and served as recreational specialist. He was a member of the Ft. Lee football team. After leaving the service he went back to work at the Toledo Mack distributorship until it closed in 1969. He then owned and operated his Mack trucking operation and also drove independently. His son Charles greatly enjoyed his many cross country trips out East with his Dad. Later Walter started Walt's Chemical Sales and Equipment with his father and then operated it on his own until his passing. He enjoyed his work tremendously over the past 25+ years. Walter had 7 grandchildren, Aaron, Brad, Evan, Emily, Samantha, Austin and Grant that he took great pride in and enjoyed his time with each and every one of them. They each had their own special place in his heart. He will be missed greatly by his beloved wife Eileen, of 55 years and his three children, Amy, Janet and Charles. He was preceded in death by his son, Eric. Friends and family may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Thursday with family present from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. and 4-9 p.m. Paragon Lodge service will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in First St. John Lutheran Church 2471 Seaman St. Toledo, OH on Friday, February 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. where the family will greet visitors after 10 a.m. Interment will take place in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy in Walt's memory can be made to Waite High School Athletic Boosters or First St. John Lutheran Church.
