William L. Bondy, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 23, 2008, after a warm family gathering with his loved ones. He was born in Toledo on April 29, 1920, to Lawrence and Imus (Anspach) Bondy. Bill was a graduate of Woodward high school and attended the University of Toledo. During World War II, he served in the 37th Division of the Ohio National Guard. The division was called to full time duty serving in the SW Pacific for 39 months, during which time he met General Douglas MacArthur. He was also involved in freeing G.I.'s at Bilibad Prison in the Philippines during World War II. His many war medals include the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with "V" for Valor, 2 Presidential Citations, and 3 Major Assault Landing Ribbons with Stars (For New Georgia, Bougainville and Luzon). He retired from the Ohio National Guard as a Colonel. Bill was the lead in the organizing of the Retired Officer's Association of Toledo and the Toledo Area Military Officers Association of America. He was elected to the Woodward High School Hall of fame and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Robinson Locke Lodge. Bill was District Chief for the City of Toledo, and also was a training instructor. After his retirement from the TFD in 1971, Bill was hired by the city of Toledo as Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. He then retired from the city of Toledo and became a consultant on fleet management and maintenance to the Food Town grocery stores. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ethel (Scheidler); daughters, Cheryl (Robert) Marquette and Linda Bondy Parr; grandchildren, Lisa (Rodney) McCoy, Robert Marquette Jr., Kristen (Mitchell) Fagelman, Megan O'Dell, Patrick (Carolyn) O'Dell; great-grandchildren, Logan O'Dell, Dominic Marquette, Liam and Lily Fagelman; step great-grandchildren, Chayse McCoy and Devin Runkle. Bill was preceded in death by his parents. Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. There will be a Last Alarm Service at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
