William H. "Bill" Mikesell, 92, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, July 21, 2015, at his home. Bill was born on February 14, 1923 to Harry and Lillian (Gansz) Mikesell in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated Salutatorian from Libbey High School in 1941. After briefly attending Toledo University College of Engineering, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he quickly advanced to First Lieutenant teaching navigation. His specialty was navigating B-24 bombers during World War II. While stationed at San Marcos Field, Texas, he met Helen Louise Bauer on a blind date. They were married in Austin, Texas on August 19, 1944.
Following the war, Bill and Helen returned to Toledo where they raised a family while he earned his JD from Toledo University Law School. He began his law practice in Toledo in 1950 specializing in estates, trusts, and probate. He shared a practice in his earlier years on Woodville Road with Eugene Cottrell, and then in the former Spitzer Building with Theodore "Ted" Markwood, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Toledo Bar Association, Ohio Bar Association, Lake Erie Conservancy, and St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Curtice. Bill was a faithful Christian with a generous heart. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time at the cottage his father built on Lake Erie.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Helen "Skip"; daughters, Helen Ann "Mikki" (John) Carlo and Sandra Sue (Sam) Denn; grandchildren, Kendra (Tony) Zadonia, Lindsey (Steve) Salens, Nathan (Mary) Denn, and Nicholas Denn; great-grandchildren, William "Liam" Denn, Sarah Denn, and Owen Salens. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Erwin; niece, Jacqueline Sauve Outland; and great aunt, Georgia Gansz.
Friends may call at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Friday, July 24, 2015 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00 am in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 20 S. Yondota Road, Curtice, where the family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 am. Private interment will take place in Toledo Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
