William J. "Willie" Moritz, 91, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Willie was born in Oregon, Ohio on April 16, 1926 to William H. and Clara (Beichter) Moritz. While in high school, Willie served as a bat boy for the Toledo Mud Hens. He served in the United States Army during World War II where he received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. On June 13, 1953, he married Julie Crews "the best decision of my life". Willie worked at Sun Oil Refinery for 38 years and was active with the retiree association. He was a member of First St. John Lutheran Church and Dunberger American Legion Post, where he served as past-commander. He enjoyed playing dartball, softball, golfing, fishing, and was an avid card player.
Willie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Julie; children, Linda (Marty) Gross and Larry (Cheryl) Moritz; 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauline Moritz; dear card playing friends, Cliff, Dwaine, Jerry, and Carol; along with many nieces, nephews, loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Wade Baumgartner; and siblings, Thelma, Velma, Leonard, Gladys, Ethel, and Roy.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel 440 S. Coy Road on Sunday, October 29, 2017 from 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm, where Dunberger American Legion services will be held at 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 30, 2017 at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to First St. John Lutheran Church, Dunberger American Legion Color Guard, or Southern Care Hospice.
